Salus Per Aquam. - "Health from Water"

Early users of Spa baths were rulers or the elite of Civilizations who believed in the therapeutic and reputed life-giving properties. The Egyptians used hot baths for therapeutic purposes as early as 2000 BC, Later on, the Greeks built baths near to natural hot springs or volcanoes where Greek celebrities would meet to exchange philosophical views and treat physical ailments.

Hippocrates believed to be the founder of modern medicine, recommended hydrotherapy for the treatment of disorders such as jaundice and rheumatism. However it wasn't until the Roman era and building of the public Roman baths that use became more mainstream. Large ornate bathhouses were built over hot springs they believed had healing properties and these were freely enjoyed by all citizens. The Spas were hugely popular, so much so that there are reports of Spas being built that could accommodate up to 3,000 bathers simultaneously. The popularity meant that use of the spas became more social and recreational rather than therapeutic and an integral part of Roman life.

Indeed the modern word Spa is derived form the Latin phrase "Salus Per Aquam," meaning "health from water."

Visiting a Spa held expectations of different things for different people, as it does today, but "Taking the waters" was recognized as a relaxing and restorative process, which was believed could also treat illness.

Today the benefits of Hydrotherapy , swimming and aquatic exercise are well documented in many medical journals and on the internet and hydrotherapy has been found to benefit sufferers of Insomnia, type 2 Diabetes, various forms of arthritis including Osteo-arthritis, ankylosing spondylitus (AS), lower back pain, easing muscle tension, as well a simple relaxation and stress relief.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
We recommend people with any medical condition to consult with your doctor before entering a hydro pool or spa. Particularly those who are at risk for heart disease or pregnant.
